While attending the Defeat Autism Now! (DAN!) conference in San Diego last October I learned about the necessity of removing toxins from everything that goes into and onto our children. One thing I had never really thought about was our water. We have been using the filter attached to the refrigerator to filter our water. I used the filtered water when I cooked and I really thought I was doing a good thing. But while in San Diego I learned that there are a lot of things in our water that just don’t get filtered out. Chlorine is one of them and chlorine is bleach. I don’t want to drink bleach, do you?
Recently I found out about a pitcher filtration system that really intrigued me. It is called Zero Water because it will remove Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) from your water, leaving you with Zero TDS in your drinking Water. Some of the substances it can remove from your water (this does not mean your water has all of these substance, but if it does, these substances will be removed. You are recommended to have your water supply tested to determine your actual water treatment needs.) are Chromium, Tri and Hexavelent, pH 6.5, Chromium, Tri and Hexavelent, pH 8.5, Lead, pH 6.5, Lead, pH 8.5, Mercury, pH 6.5, Mercury, pH 8.5, Chlorine, Hydrogen Sulfide, Iron, Zinc and Aluminum. Wow!
Each Zero Water pitcher comes with its own TDS meter; this way you can test your water to make sure it really is Zero Water. I decided to test our tap water, our refrigerator filtered water and the water from Zero Water. The water directly from our tap registered 124 TDS PPM, that is, the meter found 124 total dissolved solids in one part per million in our direct tap water. It does not tell me what those dissolved solids were but there were too many for my liking. Then I tested the water filtered through the refrigerator’s filtration system, with the results of 116. Not much better and I had been really relying on this filter to help clean our water. Finally, I used the pitcher and got a reading of 000! The meter detected Zero TDS in the Zero Water filtered water. That is amazing and I think really significant. One of Matthew’s toxicity tests showed that he had high levels of Lead, Mercury and Aluminum and we had no idea how he was getting these substances. I guess we could have been giving it to him every time I used water. How frightening.

The pitcher itself is quite easy to use. Once you wash it and install the filter you simply fill the reservoir and allow the water to run through the filter. You do need to do this about twice to get a full pitcher, but I didn’t mind when I saw how much junk it was removing from our drinking water. And the pitcher has a really ingenious and yet simple feature which I love. It has a push button in-fridge dispenser at the bottom of the pitcher, much like a drink cooler would have. This way you don’t have to pull the pitcher out of the fridge to get water out. I think that is a great little addition.
